Using Browsers

This section is intended to provide a quick reference for customizing your browser to maximize your time when working on NrG Web Highway. Many of the references have been extracted directly from the online Help provided as part of your browser, which you will find a very comprehensive and excellent further source of reference. Specific Help topic references are included in this section, as appropriate. Access the Help for Netscape Communicator by clicking Help, then Help Contents on the browser menubar, and for Internet Explorer by clicking Help, then Contents and Index. Note: If you close the browser window you will lose any changes made since your last save.

Browser Tips for Netscape Communicator 4 or higher and Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 or higher.

Netscape Communicator 4 Tips

Make your selection from the list below:

Displaying the Browser (Netscape)

We recommend you make the browser large enough to fit most of your screen before logging on to NrG Web Highway. Leaving a small border around the browser will enable you to clearly identify any new instances of the browser that are opened while you are working in a module.

Note: When using Netscape Communicator 4, NrG Web Highway modules will not automatically resize inside a browser displaying at less than 800 X 600 resolution.

Navigating the Browser (Netscape)

Title bar |  Menubar |  Toolbars |
Content area |  Status Message area

Title Bar
The title bar displays the name of the service provider with whom you are currently conducting business. To the right hand side of the title bar, there are three small icons as follows:

A single click on any of these icons will perform the task.

Menubar
The menubar allows you access to all functions available to customize the browser. Some of the more common tasks are also displayed as buttons on the various toolbars. For the less common tasks, you will need to access the appropriate menu option.

Toolbars
Toolbars are a source of visual navigation, an alternative to using the menubar. Toolbars are particularly useful in providing immediate access to the more common tasks you perform. Minimizing toolbars will maximize the overall content area to display the services in NrG Web Highway. Here is an example. Note: the example does not necessarily reflect the default order or content of these toolbars.

To minimize/restore Toolbars
To minimize a toolbar, click the tab to the left of each toolbar (see the example above) which highlights as you mouse-over. The toolbar displays as a narrow horizontal tab at the bottom of the toolbars.

To restore the toolbar in its original position, click the horizontal tab.

As the horizontal tabs are not labeled, on mouse-over each tab will display the ToolTip indicating the name of the toolbar.

Location Toolbar
Through the Bookmarks option on the Location Toolbar, you can customize the Personal Toolbar, making it quick and easy to access regularly visited sites. In this exercise we'll show you how to add a folder titled NrG to your Personal toolbar, to include specific references to NrG Web Highway modules inside the folder.

  1. Display the Home page for NrG Web Highway.
  2. On the Location Toolbar, click Bookmarks.
  3. Select Edit Bookmarks, Personal Toolbar Folder.
  4. Click File, New Folder to display the Bookmark Properties window.
  5. Type NrG in the Name field.
  6. Insert a reference in the Description field, if required.
  7. Click OK. A new icon labeled NrG displays in the Bookmarks window and at the beginning of the Personal toolbar on the browser.

To add specific module locations to this folder:

  1. On the browser, display the page you wish to add to the NrG folder.
  2. Click the Location icon on the Location Toolbar.
  3. Hold down the mouse button and drag the icon on top of the newly created NrG icon on the Personal toolbar.
  4. Release the button when the icon displays a plus sign.
  5. Click on the NrG icon to display the new location as a location in the NrG folder.

Note: When adding new locations to an existing folder, you can order locations within that list.

Navigation Toolbar
All toolbar options are designed to maximize your efficiency when using the browser. Not all of these options are required when using NrG Web Highway. Below are those options you will find useful:

Back Click the Back button to display the previous page in the history list. Note: On occasion you may find the Back button disabled. This could be because NrG Web Highway has displayed new information by opening another copy of the browser. The back button only functions to retrieve information displayed in the same browser.
Forward Click the Forward button to display the next page in the history list. This button is unavailable until you have used the Back button or the History menu item.
Reload Click this button to redisplay the current page, reflecting any changes made since the page was originally loaded.
Print Click Print to print the currently displayed page to your default printer, or select File, Print setup... from the menubar to specify your printing preferences.
Stop Click the Stop button to halt any information transfer.

Personal Toolbar
The Personal Toolbar provides a different view of your bookmarks list. Bookmarks offer a convenient means of retrieving pages whose locations you have saved. They are stored in a list saved on your computer's hard drive. Once you add a bookmark to your list, the item remains until you remove it. Through the Bookmarks option on the Location Toolbar, display your most frequently visited locations on the Personal Toolbar.

Refer to Viewing the Toolbars in Netscape's online Help for more information.

Content area
This is the main viewing area on the browser where you will perform tasks in NrG Web Highway modules, or view the information pages accessed from the Home Page.

Status Message area
Located at the very bottom of the browser, this message area is used by the browser and NrG Web Highway to display the location of a particular page or link. The Status Message area also provides feedback on the progress of a file transfer or on a particular task being performed in one of the modules on NrG Web Highway.

Specifying a Home Page
(Netscape)

You can designate your own Home page (the page first displayed when you open the browser) by changing the default Location. We recommend you consider this option if you will be working on NrG Web Highway on a regular basis. See the Specifying the Starting Page section in Netscape's online Help.
